We
are infidels within the Unitarian Universalist Association. We place
no credence in supernatural beings such as gods, angels, saints,
spirits, messiahs or ghosts. We identify ourselves as Atheists,
or as Agnostics, or Skeptics, or Freethinkers or Secular Humanists.
We hold scientific method and scientific evidence as the basis of
our beliefs, always subject to revision as newly discovered evidence
warrants.
Our
mission as Unitarian Universalist Infidels is to:
- Define
and assert our role as Infidels within local Unitarian Universalist
fellowships and the Unitarian Universalist Association, seeking
recognition from others for our rights and duties, just as we
recognize the rights and duties of those with faith in any supernatural
personage(s).
- Provide
a forum and support network where we Infidels can express and
develop natural, scientifically consistent philosophies without
being excluded or marginalized by those with faith in any supernatural
personage(s).
- Advocate
Infidel philosophies to others, both within and without Unitarian
Universalism.
- Advocate
reason and secular Humanism as preferable to beliefs in myths,
miracles, magic, superstition and the supernatural, in order to
thwart religious fanaticism that produces acts of terror, murder
and oppression. The peace of the world will be enhanced as the
world becomes more secular.
- Seed
a national, culture changing discussion on religion as we have
had on race, and women and gay rights. Our position being that
the foundation of our democracy is the principle of the separation
of church and state which cuts both ways, not only must government
not meddle in the affairs of religion organizations but religions
must also not meddle in the affairs of government.
